Remix Project – Frost

Statement of Goals and Choices

For my remix project, I decided to remix the famous movie, Frozen, into a horror movie trailer. This is and has been one of my favorite movies which is why I chose this movie, because I am so familiar with it. Overall, I was trying to create a movie trailer than is spooky and suspenseful created by the music I chose to use as well as the clips I chose to include from the movie. This trailer is supposed to give the viewer a feeling of high intensity suspense, and fear for anyone watching the movie trailer. These feelings would come up watching the trailer when the music is louder, faster with the scenes matching the tone and intensity of the music. The trailer starts out a bit spooky due to the music. It is lighter and creepier due to the child-like sound of the music. It starts out a bit slower, but the music’s intensity increases as the trailer carries on making it fast paced and scary. I also chose to make Elsa the antagonist of “Frost” because she was the easiest character to flip into the antagonist. This is because of her ice powers and how she used them throughout Frozen. During parts of the movie, she accidentally uses these powers out of fear. A lot of scenes I chose to include in my trailer were these scenes because in the movie “Frost” she could be using these powers just because she’s evil and these scenes help portray her as such.

I chose to use Adobe Premiere Pro to edit my movie trailer. I chose this because a lot of people recommended it. I had never used it before, but after doing a tutorial, I found it relatively simple to use. To achieve my goal of creating a suspenseful, intense, and scary movie trailer, I picked high intensity music and clips that matched the music that also gave off a scarier, more aggressive antagonist, Elsa. I chose to make her the antagonist because there were many clips of her that could portray her as a bad, mysterious person with ice powers. I decided to make Hans into a protagonist who was trying to take Elsa down. I used clips of him talking about Anna dying, and searching for Elsa, the Ice Queen, to make it seem like he wanted to avenge Anna. I also decided to choose a clip of them crowning Elsa to show that even though she is the bad guy, she has essentially all the power. I felt that this shows that she is scarier since she is powerful and evil.

Originally, I was planning to focus more on Olaf being the antagonist and portray him as a psychotic snowman that’s super creepy. I decided not go this route because as I was going through the movie, I couldn’t find enough clips to portray him in the way I wanted. All his scenes in Frozen are funny and lighthearted which was difficult to take from to portray him as creepy. I went the Elsa route because there was so much more depth to her character and more content to choose from. When I was selecting clips to potentially choose, I had many options to choose from which made piecing them together to create my trailer very easy. I could have made the trailer longer, but there weren’t a lot of music options that were the right length. The music was either too long, or just the right length. A lot of music I looked at was themed Halloween music that lasted an hour or more. Originally, I had a spooky song that was supposed to remind the listener of being in a cemetery, but I decided to change the music for my trailer from this. I chose to do this because I liked the mood of my first music, but some feedback I received was that it didn’t really pick up towards the end of the trailer like a lot of horror movie trailers tend to do. The music I used for my final trailer was from another horror movie trailer which I feel is fitting. I decided to use this because it gave off the intensity I was looking for which I felt like my first music choice was lacking.

I feel that a lot of what helped me achieve my goal in creating this trailer was feedback from my peers. I got some constructive feedback from Carrie during our one-on-one conference that led me ultimately into a trailer I was prouder of. At the beginning of our conference, she had asked me my feelings about it, and I think she could tell that I was hesitant about something. Even I wasn’t sure what it was that I was unsure about, but after talking to her, I realized I felt underwhelmed with my music choice and the intensity of the trailer. She told me she wasn’t really getting a lot of intensity from the trailer which led me to this realization. Another thing Carrie as well as the peers from my class suggested I do was to try and match up scenes with the bell chimes from my original music. Since I changed the music I used, I didn’t have to match up the clips with the bell chimes, but instead a different noise from my new music. I feel in doing this, it adds a lot of overall intensity that hopefully makes up for what it was lacking before. I also had some of my friends view my trailer as I was working on it to tell me their thoughts and in what areas I could improve on. One of my friends told me I should add in some transitions between clips such as fades because going straight to black seemed weird and not right. I chose to do this as well as add in more transitions with words to give a better understanding of my overall message of this trailer. Overall though, I am very happy with how my trailer turned out and I am very grateful for all of the constructive feedback I received from everyone.

Process Artifacts

My three process artifacts I chose to include for my Remix project were the screen recording of the movie, the process of extracting the clips I wanted to use, and then editing my movie trailer with the chosen clips. I figured that these three processes I did were the most important to completing my project. These processes lead to one another meaning if one was taken away, the whole project wouldn’t be able to be completed and I would have had to found other methods to complete my project which would take a longer period of time as well because I would have to go back to brainstorming my methods. The screen recording is how I obtained all of my clips. Going through the screen recording was how I trimmed the clips I wanted to use in order to edit them, and the editing the movie trailer with said clips is how I made my movie trailer. These all go hand in hand and without one, the whole thing wouldn’t be the same.

This is an artifact of me screen recording the movie. The screen recording is important because I had to screen record myself watching the entire movie on my laptop in order to get an editable copy of the movie. Without this, I wouldn’t have been able to easily make my movie trailer. Re-watching the movie also gave me ideas for what scenes I wanted to include in my trailer.

This next artifact is a picture of me going through the entire movie and extracting the clips I wanted to use for my trailer. This was an important process for me because without doing this, I wouldn’t have the clips. I also chose some audio clips to include in my trailer from this.

This artifact is me actually putting the clips together and editing my trailer. I had to choose which order I wanted the clips to go in and match that to the intensity of the music. The most challenging part of creating my trailer was choosing which of my clips to use, which to scrap, and in what order to put in the clips I decided to use.
