For my third major project of my writing class, I am going to compose a blog post and infographic about why school funding is a major issue. I decided to choose this topic because I am going to be a teacher, and this is a topic I feel strongly about. I feel that it is important to treat schools equally and give each school the same funding to ensure that all students are receiving the same resources and opportunities. In doing this, the achievement gap among students will be greatly minimized. This all stems from property tax. In getting rid of property tax, or altering this, it will lead toward and eventually get rid of the difference in funds across school districts.
I chose to create a blog post for my project because since this is something I feel strongly and passionate about, I wanted to write a lot about it. I felt like this was the best method to get across all my words. the other ideas either didn’t appeal to me or weren’t as open ended as I would’ve liked them to be.
I chose to create an infographic along with my blog post because I wanted to create something that targeted a greater audience than my blog post did. This infographic contained basic information about school funding why school funding is an issue to get many people thinking more about it and what they can do to change it.
In my research I have found that the main factor that creates the difference in funding of school districts is property tax. School districts get their money from the taxes of the people that live in that district’s property. I have found that there is a huge difference between the highest spending school districts and the lowest spending school districts. This puts the students at a disadvantage and this is not their fault. Just because they live in a district that has less money than that of a wealthier district doesn’t mean the student should be negatively affected. The way school districts are funded needs to change in order to help all students have an equal opportunity.
