Response #5

For all of my compositions, the process creating them has been similar, but different. I feel like this is because all of my compositions are different modes. I start out by brainstorming what exactly I want to compose, compose it, and then edit it. These are the basic steps I perform when composing each of my composition but there are more steps added in each mode depending on which mode I am using to compose. For example, I did all these steps when composing my linguistic and aural modes, but my linguistic mode required much more editing while I was writing. My linguistic text is a concrete poem and I rhymed every other line. This required a lot of thinking and when I wrote a line I didn’t really like, I would have to go back and rethink what I wanted to say. My aural text is a recording of one of the libraries on campus that I added lo-fi music over. Recording the 5-10 minute of my soundscape didn’t require much thinking besides as to where I wanted to record and when. I had to edit the soundscape afterwards which I have to do for all of my compositions as well.

Looking at all my compositions as a whole, the brainstorming process has been about the same for each. I then made a plan of what I wanted to do for each one (linguistic: concrete poem, visual: emoji story, aural: soundscape, spatial/gestural: map). Each of my compositions has another mode and has switched from mode to mode. For example, when writing my concrete poem, it was mainly linguistic, but when I put it into a picture, it changed to visual as well as linguistic. For my emoji story, it started out as linguistic since it is the story of Rapunzel, then it switched to visual as well as linguistic because I changed the words into pictures. For my aural composition, it was just aural, but once I added the sound of lo-fi in the background, it kind of changed from just aural to aural and spatial because it was easier to visualize where the soundscape took place. For my spatial piece, I took information about the different schools in different areas of the state and put them on a map and color coded them based on the star rating of that school. This went from just being a map, to also being visual because it is easy to look at and see where the good schools and not so good school are based on their color. When talking about transmodal texts, I thought that it was very difficult to think about and create, but I realize now that I was already doing it while composing my other texts.
